Current Information:Born-St George's-in-the-East
During December, 1914, the 3rd Rifle Brigade battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division were in the front line near La Chapelle Armentières, a sector of the Western Front where they would stay all that winter. The Battalion Diary makes little comment about their time spent here in December but it can be assumed that it was cold and wet and that they were subjected to regular periods of shell fire and the attention of enemy snipers. Patrols would have been sent out into no-man’s-land most nights and that there would have been casualties such as Charles Arnold who was killed on 19th December. |
